Use this activity to introduce students to adverbs deductively or to help them to identify the different categories of adverbs.
- First, have the students watch the video and come up with what they think is the topic of the song.
- Give the students the lyrics to the song in French with the adverbs underlined. Here is a PDF copy.
- Have the students listen to the song and follow along with the lyrics.
- Then, have the students define the underlined terms as well as any other necessary terms for which they do not know the definition.
- Next, after finding the definitions, have the students categorize the adverbs. You want them to find the five categories of adverbs color-coded on this KEY to the song.
- Review the categories that the students found, hopefully they will hit on at least one of the actual categories of adverbs.
- Ask the students if they see any similarities between the words that they looked at and if they might be able to come up with any rules. This may be challenging as there are many irregular adverbs.
- Review and tell the students about adverbs, the five categories, and how they are used. Also talk about regular -ment adverbs and how they can be formed from adjectives. Refer to the video at the top of this page to have them review this information at home and take formal notes.
