Les Pronoms Objets Doublés (double object pronouns)

Notes
- So far we have already learned about Direct Object Pronouns, Indirect Object Pronouns, and Reflexive Pronouns; this lesson is about using two object pronouns in one sentence.
- When there are two different objects in one sentence, one will be direct, while the other will be indirect.
Ex: Elles donnent les cadeaux (direct) aux enfants (indirect). - Remember:
Direct Object: Who or what is directly receiving the action of the verb (who is being [verbed])
Indirect Object: To whom or for whom the action is being done (who is being [verbed] to/at/for) - There is a STRICT order that object pronouns follow when you have more than one in a sentence. The image below shows that order.
- To learn about the uses of y and en, you can visit this page, but for now we will focus on the direct and indirect objects.
- The easiest way to memorize this chart is to consider the object pronouns in groups.
1st: The longest group > me, te, se, nous, vous
2nd: The group of 3 > le, la, les
3rd: The group of 2 > lui, leur
4th: y
5th: en (you can also remember y - en sounds like a donkey, so they go at the end) - Even when you have multiple object pronouns in a sentence, the general rules of object pronouns apply:
- All object pronouns will go directly before the verb giving them the action
Ex: Elles envoient les lettres à leurs parents. > Elles les leur envoient.
They send letters to their parents. > They send them to them. - When a verb is negative, the ne... pas goes around both the object pronouns AND the verb.
Ex: Il ne vend pas ses CDs à sa soeur. > Il ne les lui vend pas.
He does not sell his CDs to his sister. > He does not sell them to her. - Here are a few examples of double object pronouns in action:
Ex: Elles emprutent des vêtements à ma soeur. > They lend clothes to my sister.
Non! Elles ne les lui emprutent pas! > No! They don't lend her those!
Ex: Est-ce que tu me donnes ta voiture? > Are you giving me your car?
Oui, je te la donne. > Yes, I'm giving it to you.
