Les Verbes en -ir et -re (regular -ir and -re verbs)
Videos
Notes
- -ir and -re verbs are the last two infinitive verbs stems in French, which are conjugated in the same way as -er verbs but they have different endings.
- If you remember, there are two easy steps to conjugating:
- Drop the infinitive ending, which leaves you with what is called the stem or radical.
- Add the present-tense endings.
Present-tense endings will differ depending on the verb's infinitive (-er, -ir, or -re).

Verb Conjugation Relay Race
Directions:
Materials: one container of infinitives per team, one discard container per team for "finished" verbs
Activity courtesy of J. Rauchenburg
Directions:
- Split the class into groups of 3 or 4. Each group should have their desks together to create a table.
- Give each group a six-sided die (singular of dice).
- Tell the kids to clear off their desks except for each kid has a sheet of notebook paper and ONE PEN per group. All other pens and pencils are put on the floor.
- Write about 6-12 verbs on the board.
- When the teacher says go, one student in each group starts rolling until s/he rolls a six (just a random number).
- Once s/he gets a 6, s/he picks up the one and only pen and starts to conjugate the verbs in whatever tense you've been studying.
- While s/he is conjugating, the next student is rolling the die at the same time... the moment s/he gets a 6, s/he grabs the pen from that first student and s/he starts conjugating and the cycle continues until a student completes the conjugations.
- The game moves fast and you always have one kid rolling and one kid writing and one or two kids eager for their turn to roll or write.

Verb Conjugation Relay Race
Directions:
- The class is divided into 2-3 teams.
- Each team has a container filled with infinitives (each container has the same verbs.)
- The first student from each team takes an infinitive (on a slip of paper) from the container, runs to the board and conjugates it as quickly as he/she can.
- Once the student has finished the conjugation, the teacher gives a thumbs up or down. If it is correct, the student runs to the back of the room to deposit the word in another container. If it is wrong, the verb is put back in the "pot" from which they pulled it.
- The first student goes to the back of the line and the second student takes over, etc.
- The first team to complete all the infinitives wins.
