Madame Probst's Remote-Learning Guide

13/4/2020

In this post, you will find everything you need to know about my remote learning class. All classwork will be managed via Google Classroom; this is the last blog update until we return to school.
If you have any questions at all, please email me at bprobst@wcpss.net or send me a Remind text; join directions are at the bottom of this post.

Classwork

All work will be completed on Google Classroom. Each week, Madame Probst will post a schedule (sample below), with all of the necessary assignments to complete that week. All assignments are due on Friday unless otherwise stated.

Under the Classwork tab on Google Classroom, you will find the week's outline along with all of the assignments. Madame Probst will also create, attach, and send out a daily video highlighting different aspects of the course.

Sample Weekly Schedule

Scroll through the sample weekly schedule below to see what is posted on students' Google Classroom pages.

How to Manage your Google Classroom for Remote Learning

Watch this video to learn tips and tricks on how to manage your Google Classroom in order to maximize the organization of your Classwork tab and keep track of your assignments during remote learning.

Grading

The county has provided these grading guidelines for seniors, and these grading guidelines for 9-11 grade students. Here is what this means for this class:
  • Seniors who were passing as of March 13th have passed the course and will not receive any more grades and will receive a P for passing; this semester will not factor into GPA. Regardless, they are encouraged and welcomed to participate in 4th quarter activities.
  • Seniors who were not passing on March 13th must coordinate with me (or other teachers for other courses) and work out how to pass the course.
  • 9-11 grade students who were passing as of March 13th have passed the third quarter and will receive a P for passing for their third quarter grade.
  • For the fourth quarter, decisions have not yet been made regarding whether or not students will receive traditional A-F letter grades or simply P/F (pass/fail), therefore 9-11 grade students should work on their assignments and work to earn the grade that they desire. Should more information become available, it will be shared with parents and students.
  • I will be providing feedback on all submitted assignments starting April 13 and point out ways to improve, which will be particularly helpful for students going on to the next level of French.

Missing Assignments

During our remote-learning time, late work will not be penalized, but all other redo/make-up procedures will be followed. Once an assignment is entered into PowerSchool, if a student would like to redo or make-up that assignment, he/she must fill out a redo/make-up form, linked here, which will send an email to Madame Probst to go and check the assignment.

Suggested Student Remote Learning Schedule

Here is the suggested student schedule for how you should manage your time while remote learning. Remember: this is suggested! If you are unable to work on a class during the specified time, then adjust your schedule as necessary. If you miss a synchronous learning opportunity, your teacher will provide an alternative assignment or a way to make up the information yourself. There is a lot going on, so if you need help setting your schedule, reach out! I can help! Right-click on the picture and open it in a new tab to make it bigger.

Madame Probst's Remote Learning Schedule

Picture
This schedule indicates when I will be available, when I will be working with students, my Office Hour sessions, and when I am unavailable. I sent an email with this schedule, which includes links to the different sessions, so please refer to that document for the appropriate links. Right-click on the picture and open it in a new tab to make it bigger.
Here is a legend of the times I have shown on this schedule:
Coursework: During this time, I am working on creating assignments or providing feedback. I am available via email or Remind during this time.
Office Hour: I will be in a Google Meet session where students and parents can come to ask questions. All are welcome! Each day's office hour has a different Google Meet link, so please go to schedule that I emailed to you and select the office hour session on the correct day.
AP: I am working with AP students in a synchronous Google Meet environment. Students should click on the appropriate day's link to join. Please do not join these sessions unless you are an AP student.
French 2: GimKit/Nutty Tilez: Twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays French 2 students will be encouraged to join a Google Meet in which we will play practice vocabulary games! Join in on the fun!

I will not be available during greyed-out time periods.

Student Expectations for Remote Learning
in Madame Probst's Class

The county has sent out these guidelines for remote learning. Here are student expectations specific to my French courses:
  • First and foremost, take care of yourself and your people. You, your family, and anybody else who may be important to you or rely on you should not suffer because we are doing remote learning. If you need to help out your family, work, or take care of somebody else, please do that before you work on assignments for my class. People are far more important than French.
  • Ask for help!!! If you need help, do not hesitate to reach out via email or Remind, or join one of my office hours. This could include needing help with French, or just needing help with life in general. If you're in a bad place, you need somebody to talk to, or you are just lost when it comes to conjugating verbs, I am here for all of those things.
  • Do your work. If you are planning on progressing to the next level of French, it is essential that you complete the assignments that I am giving you. Madame Folger and I have gone through and figured out the bare minimum that you will need to learn in order to succeed in the next level of French, so be sure to follow our guidelines and do the assignments. You can do them on your own time, whenever and wherever you need to, but it is in your best interest to complete them.
  • Do your OWN work. Do not submit work that was not completed by you, meaning it was completed by another classmate, another student, a native speaker, or a translator. It is not beneficial to your learning if somebody else does the work for you. If you submit work that I suspect was completed by somebody else or completed with the aid of a translator, your work will be returned without a grade, you will receive no credit, and you will be responsible for reaching out to me to make it up.

Communication with Madame Probst

You can communicate with me during the times indicated on my schedule via Remind or via email. If you try to contact me outside of my availability, I will respond to you as soon as I am able, likely the next business day.

    • Tomorrow you will have a quiz on five of these terms. I will say the French, you will write the English. It is only an oral quiz, you will not see the terms written out.
    • The best way to study these terms is the "Learn" activity on Quizlet, which mimics the quiz
IV. Lire: Les Avantages à Voyager [20 minutes]
  • Today we will finish the activity that we started in class yesterday about the advantages of travel.
  • We will split into groups in which you have one person who has read each section.
    • In this group, share the following:
      • the main idea of your section
      • the cognates/known words you identified
      • the answers to the questions in your section
    • Then, after sharing, determine how you would rank each of the four reasons to travel, from most to least important. Make sure you can give a reason why!
  • Then, you will return to your own seat and reflect on the "Mon Opinion" question (in French!), which you will write on the back of the paper.
  • We will review the assignment as a class.
  • Add this assignment to page 25 of your Cahier Interactif.

V. Paris en Métro [30 minutes]
  • One of this unit's goals is to be able to read a city map, and one important type of map is the Métro map, which we will explore today.
  • First, you will be paired with a partner and one device, which you will share.
  • With your partner, based on what you already know about public transportation or just what these words mean otherwise, define the following in the context of a métro and identify an example of each on the map:
    • le terminus
    • une ligne
    • une station
    • une correspondance
  • Then, we will go over some other important features of a métro map:
    • Métro lines do not run north/south or east/west. The directions are named for the last station in each direction.
    • Each bump on the line is a station. The name of each station is written beside it.
    • Sometimes multiple lines meet at the same station, which is indicated by a white circle/oval on the map. This is a connection, or correspondence, where you can change métro line or even transfer to a train outside of Paris.
    • The lines that are labeled with a letter are RER (Réseau Express Régional) lines, which is a separate public transport rail system that goes to the suburbs of Paris and the surrounding cities.
  • Then, we will practice reading the map a little by doing the following:
    • Find Ligne 2
    • What are the 2 terminus of Ligne 2?
    • What is the first "correspondence" on Ligne 2 if you start at the station Nation?
    • Which lignes can you connect with at Gare du Nord?
  • Then, we will play a Kahoot challenge in which you and your partner will work together and use the map to try answer the question quickest!
