Le Futur Simple (the simple future)
Video
Notes
Conjugating the future tense is rather simple, for regular -er and -ir verbs, all you have to do is keep the infinitive stem and add the future-tense endings. For regular -re verbs, you simply drop the "e" and add the future-tense endings.
Steps:
Steps:
- Find the infinitive of the action.
-er > manger
-ir > finir
-re > ** drop the -e ** attendr - Add the future-tense endings:
je |
-ai |
nous |
-ons |
tu |
-as |
vous |
-ez |
il/elle/on |
-a |
ils/elles |
-ont |
You can see for the je, tu, il/elle/on, and ils/elles forms, you are actually just adding the conjugation of avoir for that form.
Ex: Je mangerai
For the nous and vous forms, you are actually just adding the present-tense endings for -er and -re verbs for those forms.
Ex: Nous mangerons
Overall, conjugating the futur is rather easy. Of course, there are a few irregular stems that must be memorized:
aller --> ir --> J'irai (I will go)
avoir --> aur --> J'aurai (I will have)
être --> ser --> Je serai (I will be)
faire --> fer --> Je ferai (I will do)
pouvoir --> pourr --> Je pourrai (I will be able to)
devoir --> devr --> Je devrai (I will have to)
savoir --> saur --> Je saurai (I will know)
venir --> viendr --> Je viendrai (I will come)
voir --> verr --> Je verrai (I will see)
vouloir --> voudr --> Je voudrai (I will like/want)
Ex: Je mangerai
