Le Passé Composé avec être (the past tense with to be)
Video
Notes
- There are 17 verbs which use être as the auxiliaire instead of avoir in the passé composé. The table below shows these verbs and their past participles.
- Just like the passé composé with avoir, these verbs will all have two parts when conjugated in the passé composé, they will just use être as the auxiliaire instead of avoir.
Ex: Elle est revenue à la maison à 6h.
auxiliaire + participe passé
- One can use the acronym DR MRS VANDERTRAMPP (or MRS DR VANDERTRAMPP) to remember these 17 verbs.
- In addition to these verbes using être as the auxiliaire, you must also make agreement between the past participle and the subject of the verb.
Ex: Elles sont montées la montagne.
They (women) climbed the mountain.
> The subject, elles, is feminine and plural, so an "es" was added to the end of the participe passé, monté. - If your subject is feminine, you must add an "e" to the end of your past participle.
Ex: Elle est allée au cinéma avec son copain. > She went to the movies with her boyfriend. - If your subject is plural, you must add an "s" to to past participle.
Ex: Marie et Marco sont montés l'escalier. - If your subject is both feminine and plural, you must add an "es" to the past particple.
Ex: Les filles sont descendues de l'avion. - Reflexive verbs will also use être as the auxiliaire, and therefore will follow all of the same agreement rules as the Vandertramp verbs.
Ex: Elle se lave les dents. > Elle s'est lavée les dents.
