RÉPONSES AUX QUESTIONS

  1. How do you identify the gender of a noun? also How would you know if a noun that ends in -e is masculine or feminine?
Unfortunately, there is no easy way to figure out gender and it requires a lot of practice and studying, but here are three basic rules to consider when determining the gender of a noun:
    1) Generally, a noun that ends in -e is feminine. If it does not end in -e, it is generally masculine. This rule has many exceptions, so you must consider the other two rules. If the other two rules apply more, use them.
    2) If the noun has an inherent or biological gender (is actually a male or a female), which happens with animals and people, then the noun will keep that gender.
Ex: homme = man = masculine even though it ends in -e
    3) Memorizing each noun with an article is the most surefire way to remember the gender of a noun. Each time we learn a new noun, it has an article on the vocabulary list.
Ex: cahier (notebook) was learned as "un" cahier, which we now know means that "cahier" is masculine.
For our quiz, we will not see any new nouns that we have never seen before.
  2. How can we remember all of the exceptions for plural nouns?
You must, must, must study and memorize the exceptions. I will list them here:
Generally, to make a noun plural, you just change the article to plural and add an -s, unless it follows one of these exceptions:
    1) Nouns ending in -eau, -eu, or -au take an -x instead of -s
Ex: un tableau > des tableaux
    2) Nouns ending in -al and -ail will change to -aux
Ex: un animal > des animaux
    3) Nouns ending in -ou generally take -s, except for the following, which take -x:
bijou, caillou, chou, hibou, joujou, pou, genou
des bijoux, des cailloux, des choux, des hiboux, des joujoux, des poux, des genoux
    4) Nouns that already end in s, x, or z will not change at all!
  3. How do you know when to use le/la or un/une to describe gender?
It depends on what you want to say (the/a/an/some) and the gender of the noun.
    > If you want to say something like "the girl (fille)," you will use le, la which both mean the. Because "fille" is feminine, you will use la, the feminine form of the. > la fille = the girl
    > If you want to say something like "a man (homme)," you will use un, or une which both mean a/an. Because "homme" is masculine, you will use un, the masculine form of a/an. > un homme = a man
  4. When do you know when to use a definite or indefinite article? also How can you be sure about whether the articel should be definite or indefinite when the noun is plural?
For the purposes of the quiz, I will ask you to give me the definite or indefinite article.
For the purposes of actually using the language, it depends on what you are trying to say.
    > If you are trying to say "the" somethingorother, you will use a definite article (le, la, or les) because they all mean "the." You have to pick the correct form (le, la, or les) based on the gender and number of your noun. See above.
    > If you are trying to say "a/an" somethingorother, you will use an indefinite article (un, or une) because each means "a/an."
    > If your noun is plural and you want to say "the" somethingorothers, you will use "les" because it means "the" and is plural.
    > If your noun is plural and you want to say "some" somethingorothers, you will use "des" because it means "some."
The difference between definite and indefinite articles is like the difference between the red apple on my desk (la pomme rouge) and a red apple, just any old red apple (une pomme rouge). THE red apple was referring to a specific red apple, while a red apple was referring to any apple that is red.
  5. When you are saying "There are some tables" why would you use "ce sont" instead of "il y a?"
Ce sont means "these are," which is referring to the tables about with you are talking and is indicating the tables about which you are talking. In spoken English we often say "there are some tables" and gesture at the tables, but this actually does not mean the same thing. "There" is not specific, it is simply saying what is or is not in a place, while "these are" is referring to something specific, in this case the tables, that was previously mentioned. "Il y a" is saying "there is/are," so it will be used when whatever we are talking about was not previously mentioned.
Il y a des tables. (There are some tables) Ce sont des tables rouges. (They/these are red tables).
