DEVOIRS: Cornell notes on the use of a bilingual dictionary

ITINÉRAIRE

I. Sonneur [5 minutes]
  • You have until the beginning of class to study for your BOOM quiz on the Quizlet list U1.1A: Les Présentations (2).

II. BOOM Quiz [10 minutes]
  • Pull out a sheet of paper and number it from 1-6.
  • Mme Probst will project and say the terms in French, you will write the English equivalent on your paper.
  • Turn your quiz in to the DONNER box when you have finished.

III. Les numéros 1 à 20 [25 minutes]
  • Today we will learn the numbers 1 through 20.

  • To practice, we will play a game called Dix (deece)!
  1. We will go around the room and count from 1 to 20.
  2. When it is your turn, you can choose to say one, two, or three successive numbers.
  3. The goal is to not be the one to say the number dix or vingt.
    Ex: 
    Student 1: 1, 2
    Student 2: 3, 4, 5
    Student 3: 6
    Student 4: 7, 8, 9
    Student 5: 10 OUT!

IV. L'alphabet et les accents [30 minutes]
  • Today we will learn about the French alphabet and accents!
  • As a class, we will recite the alphabet together. You can also watch the video below to help you to memorize the alphabet!
  • In French we also have a series of accents that are used to spell words. In order to spell out a letter which includes an accent, say the letter, then name the accent.
    Ex: é =  e (euh), accent (ak-sahnt) aigu (ay-goo)
  • Here is a chart of the different accents followed by some example words:

  • Here are some aural examples of how these accents affect the pronunciation of words in French.

V. Les Notes Cornell [25 minutes]
  • Finally, we will learn how to take Cornell Notes in order to prepare for our homework tonight: take Cornell notes on the use of a bilingual dictionary.
  • You can check out this video to learn how to take Cornell notes.
  • For your Cornell notes, you will need to include the following things:
    > Notes on key words/vocabulary
    > Questions that are answered on the right side
    > A summary of the notes
  • We will work with these notes tomorrow in class, so be prepared!
  • For your notes tonight, answer the following questions:
  1. What are the two parts of a bilingual dictionary?
  2. What are the different abbreviations you may see? What do they all mean?
  3. How can you determine the gender of a noun?
  4. How can you determine which definition to use?
  5. How will verbs be given?
  6. What are cognates and false cognates?
